The Big Easy...

Anybody who's been to our home knows that we love New Orleans. It was where we met for our first date. And it was a great first date. Minus the severe anaphalaxysis and the trip to the Tulane ER but that's a whole other story. As is the true tale of how we went back there for our first "post-having-twin-babies" weekend. The weekend that Hurricane Katrina hit. No lie. It was crAzy. But life is a roller coaster sometimes.

The owners of the house below know this only too well. Their home was wiped out during Katrina and the house you see now was built to look old and original...this girl. did a painstakingly fantastic job...take a look.

The thing I think I love most about her story is that she used to be a lawyer. During the turmoil of losing their home during Katrina she found solace in finding bargains for her home and fixing them up. She discovered she LOVED rehabbing furniture and that she was good at it. She found a passion and reinvented her life and I love that. Reminds me of the saying "what would you do if you knew you wouldn't fail?"

Its that time of year...

Kids of all ages are going back to school. Look at this cute dorm room...

I never lived in a dorm in college but I might have considered it if this was my room. This is off the hook.

Love the chair...it reminds me of these by Lauren Liess...

Another thing to love in that dorm room is the geometric headboard.

Guess what its made of?

Sit down and I'll tell you.

A piece of wood and painter's tape that was spray painted gold. Yep.

While we're talking back to school this desk would be so cute for a teenage girls room whether at home or off at school...

hanging it up...

the TV that is.

I went over to my peep Susan's house to help her rearrange her furniture. Long story short they are moving their big TV to a different wall. The one that doesn't have a cable jack. My apologies to Marc...he's being a great husband and agreed to the move (following the major rule in marriage: happy wife = happy life).

Not only are they getting cable on that wall but they're also getting a new TV (its bigger than the old one because that's how men roll, am I right?).

Here are some inspiration ideas for how to style around it...

love this PB console...and all the photos...

Marc is a terrific photographer and has unbelievable photos already framed...

granted this one isn't hung on the wall but I like the gallery wall above and the size of the chunky buffet

their current console is low like this one so maybe it could still work?

I don't know about you but I think I like this last one the best.

my sister rocks!

On the last day of her summer vacation she hung her new curtains made from yellow chevron...

much better than the before right?

Maybe I watch too much tv?

particularly the HGTV show "House Hunters"?

Because sometimes I can just see a picture and know exactly where the house is located based on its look.

Take this room...

It just shouts "Houston" doesn't it?

love this sink and the pattern of the tile floor

I like it but like a good t-shirt I'd like to get other colors.
Its by Moon and Lola but I got mine through Swell Caroline.

Have you heard of The Bauble Bar?
I saw them on their site plus you get $10 off your first order and free shipping.
Put this down as a thing that make you go hmmmmm??????

I LOVE this room...

via

and the best thing is...

that this girl gives sources! I love it when designers do that and don't make me use my mad detective skills searching for stuff. And I'm convinced that a hack of the IKEA Rast nightstand like they did above is in my future since I've saved about ten links to different versions of it but this one is by far the BEST ever. I mean can you believe it went from this
ikea rast

to this

Go visit Kirsten's website to see more of this beautiful room and the list of her sources.

it must run in the family

turns out my younger two sisters have it too.

Look at what my sister Julie did in her breakfast area...

high vs my (striped duvet bedding)

I LOVE it when I find a knock-off
more affordable version of something I really want.

Case in point this duvet that I posted about recently

I really thought brown was the way to go
but with their room I knew navy would work too.
See I'd already fallen in love with the
when I was updating the nursery to a big boys' room.

I'd coveted searched for
and found similar duvets at places like
BUT they were more than I wanted to spend.
And of course with twins I need two.
Plus two shams.
I just couldn't justify it...plus
you know I'm a girl who LOVES a deal.
Although I'll admit I tried to snag them
when they went on sale at NM earlier this summer
but alot of ladies like me must have seen them too...
they promptly sold out of the twin size.
Lucky for me
because I went to the shopping vortex
 I call Target
(otherwise known to my husband
as the place to go in to pick up toothpaste
and spend $100 every single flipping time. HA!)

Bamboo shades

I'm trying to talk my sister into getting bamboo shades for her master re-do.

I was hesitant too before taking the plunge for the windows in our breakfast area but I'm glad I did...

(this was taken before my overstock rug arrived for under the table)

I think it looks so much better than it did...here's the before (with roman shades I DIY'ed)

In case you're not sure how high to hang them here's a good article with some eye candy to peruse...

thanks

We were at the hospital today with one of our sons. I don't think we were in the waiting room for five minutes before I looked around and reminded myself how blessed we are to have such healthy children. Yes, one has asthma and has had some increasingly scary allergic reactions as of late.
But we're blessed...we're five minutes away from a world renowned medical center, we can afford his medicine and treatments, and his condition is well-controlled at this time.
For all this we are so incredibly thankful. I know others are not so fortunate.

don't hate me

for another chevron post...

via

My sister just bought the same yellow chevron fabric to make curtains for her newly painted bedroom. Its going to be gorgeous! The wall color went from camel brown to soothing gray. I'll be sure and post pics as soon as she gets them to me (hint hint Mary). Mary is so brave...she's never sewn before and is going to buy her first sewing machine to do this. She's a mom of three and a first grade teacher so I know there's nothing she can't do! Here's the best tutorial I've found online for making the all important fabric cuts for drapery panels...you can find tutorials for sewing and hemming them as well plus lots of other DIY tutorials and eye candy on Janell's site.

Ok Mary, get on the stick and do some DIY curtains so we can see some before and afters!

for Susan

She's my running peep (holla!) who has two girls in college. When they leave for school they'll be taking most of her furniture with them and Susan is revamping her house. So I searched pinterest yesterday for some inspiration pics for her. Then I had a minute today (that's how I roll...I blog crawl while I eat) and low and behold I found this:

woohoo! I love stuff like this!

Here's the pinterest pics...some are solely to get an idea of furniture placement, some I picked when she said slipcovers and she did a FANTASTIC DIY beachy take off on an American flag...
hope it was ok to post this pic Susan...I'll take it down if you want. :)

green armoire via simplyseleta typepad Decorating Around the Television

more slipcovers...very girly so maybe not...Marc might not like.

same room, less girly...
